Bum Bags vs Fanny Packs: What’s the Difference?

At first glance, they look the same. A zippered pouch. A strap. A hands-free way to carry your essentials. But depending on where you are in the world - or how much you care about accidental innuendo - you’ll either call it a bum bag or a fanny pack. So, what’s the actual difference?

Spoiler: it's mostly about location, language, and, well… linguistics that could get you side-eyed in a British pub.

Same Bag, Different Name

Let’s get the technical bit out of the way. A bum bag and a fanny pack are essentially the same thing. Both refer to a small pouch worn around the waist or across the body, designed to keep your phone, keys, lip balm and chaotic life in order.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

  • In the UK, we call them bum bags.

  • In the US, they’re known as fanny packs.

  • And if you're Australian, you might go either way...but probably still giggle.

The difference isn’t in the bag, it’s in the language and cultural context.

Why the Name Change?

The word fanny means different things depending on where you are:

  • In America, fanny is a PG way of saying butt.

  • In Britain, it refers to, er… a completely different area of anatomy. And definitely not one you'd casually name a bag after.

That’s why Brits avoid “fanny pack” altogether. Hence: bum bag. Which, frankly, still sounds a bit awkward - but less likely to cause a school trip scandal.

Is There a Style Difference?

Not officially. However, there are some subtle differences in how the terms are used:

  • Fanny packs (US) are often associated with tourist kitsch, ‘80s dads at Disneyland, or ironic streetwear.

  • Bum bags (UK) have had a full glow-up in recent years—seen on festival-goers, Gen Z trendsetters, and the occasional dog walker with a latte.

In reality, they’re the exact same product. What matters more is how you wear it. Sling it crossbody for fashion points, or stick to waist-level for functionality.

What Do Gen Z Call Them?

If you really want to sound cool (or at least not 35), here are a few other names floating around:

  • Waist bag – A neutral, modern take.

  • Belt bag – Favoured by fashion brands like Gucci and Lululemon.

  • Crossbody pouch – More common in the streetwear scene.

  • Mini sling – For the TikTok crowd.

  • Just a bag, Mum – If you ask your teenager.

So… What Should You Call It?

Honestly? Call it whatever you want. Whether you say fanny pack or bum bag, you’re still part of the same practical, pocket-free revolution.

Just be aware of your audience. Especially if you’re backpacking through London and loudly announcing your love for your “fanny pack” on the Tube.

TL;DR

  • Same bag. Different name.

  • Fanny pack = American

  • Bum bag = British

  • No real design difference—just regional slang and some awkward translations.

  • Wear it crossbody for maximum style, sass, and snack storage.
